ANYTHING BUT A QUIET NIGHT HOTH

ELIAS.T.HOTH ANYTHING BUT QUIET AT THE COLNE BLUES FESTIVAL 10.00
August 29th at the 21st Colne international blues festival will
certainly go down in the annals of Colne history as great night to
remember!
The band had to bring in at the very last minute a
replacement session drummer in the form of “Alex Atkinson” a name to
remember, Alex a budding 22 year old from Altrincham near Manchester who
ultimately proved to be absolutely awesome and after frantic rehearsal
almost every night last week with the band all the hard work finally
paid off. Alex proved to be the drummer for hell, mammoth monster ball
breaking hard rocking beats, with his own highly inventive self produced
2 min drum solo to die for that sent the large chanting Colne crowds
wild. Alex’s savage drumming pounded relentlessly on throughout the
night putting the super charged Elias.T .Hoth 12000 watt pa system in
high octane overdrive over load.
The band would publicly
like to thank Alex for superb efforts and professionalism, Alex brought a
great deal to the Hoth clan and the word “a magnificent performance”
immediately comes to mind! Thanks Alex!
Picture
hell fire and brimstone drummer Alex Atkinson caught live in action at
Colne festival 2010 producing his own unique fire brand relentless and
savage drumming for Elias.T.Hoth.
The Gig
The
band cranked out their classic hothic opener Mississippi burnin,
followed rapidly by FBI, then they surprised everyone with the ZZ Top
Cover Tush, next “A Liddle bit a Sinnin” and then to change the pace the
irrepressible unrelenting ultimate train song “Louisiana train” before
taking the slightest of breath which came in form of brilliant 2 min
self improvised drum solo by Alex Atkinson, said Elias, “Alex impressed
me so much in rehearsals last week I suggested a self improvised drum
solo” I thought it would be a great idea, an opportunity Alex literally
grasped with both hands”, Alex proved to be simply astounding and
stunning! The drum solo led straight into the demonic “Hex on you” and
then unstoppable “Ozark Alabama Please” then another shock in form of
Elias’s unique southern drawling version of the AC/DC classic “High way
to Hell” yeah its seems its applicable to southern rockin sinners down
many of whom are also clearly with us on the highway to hell!
Then
the band slowed things right down with “sleazy hussy fever”, Sam
mesmerised the audience with his bridging lead guitar solo before
finally crashing into the blistering Rollin Thunda!
The
band had only had time to rehearse a limited number of songs with Alex
the session drummer, so prevent a riot they simply encored with Tush and
Ozark Alabama Please and the whole place simply erupted!

RAY WYLIE HUBBARD, RAW DISPLAY OF LEGENDARY MUSIC TALENT
ozman writes "Ray Wylie Hubbard: St Bonaventure's Parish Social Club,Bristol UK Mon 24/5/2010.
Review taken from the ''Bristol Evening Post''.
In the world of American roots music,Ray Wylie Hubbard is something of a legend, cited by many of today's alt-country heroes as a major influence and in the past few weeks nominated for three awards in the prestigious Americana Music Awards including artist of the year.
This was his first ever visit to Bristol, and so for most of us this was our first chance to see-live and up close-the grizzled Texan outlaw whose voice is as rough and as dusty as the deserts of his home state, and whose past is as dark as so many of his songs.
This was a stripped down performance.Hubbard played the smallest guitar with an equally small amp that was ideal for his quieter finger-picked songs, but equally up to his rollicking blues playing with its heavy bass lines and rocking slide work.
He was accompanied throughout by drummer Rick Richards playing one drum,a tambourine and various small bits of percussion.yet still managing to produce some surprisingly strong blues-rock rhythms.
SNAKE FARM,with its sleazy lyrics,is not the obvious choice for trying to get the audience to sing along, especially as early as the second song, but somehow he managed it,although pointing out that this song about the dancing Ramona''ain't exactly Kumbaya''.
You could say much the same about the equally sleazy song that followed,''A DRUNKEN POET'S DREAM'',written with Hayes Carll.
You felt that there was more than a little personal history behind ''NAME DROPPIN' '',about bands achieving success too quickly, introduced with a poke at artists who are only too quick to tell you about their famous friends.
Mind you Hubbard was not exactly slow in name-checking people in his lyrics, for there were references to John Lee Hooker,Howlin' Wolf,Muddy Waters,Townes Van Zandt,Charlie Daniels and even the Alarm.
''WANNA ROCK AND ROLL''introduced as''a little trashy bluegrass murder ballad''stormed along like a train and somehow managed to morph into''JOHN THE REVELATOR''which is an odd combination but actually worked extremely well.
Most of the songs were sung to fairly heavy driving bluesy rhythms, but slower songs like ''BLACK WING'' and ''WITHOUT LOVE'' were equally effective.
He tends to speak and even snarl his words rather than sing these days, with a voice that sounds as if he has been rubbing his tonsils with sandpaper.
But Ray Wylie Hubbard's real strength is his lyrics, which are often closer to superbly crafted, concisely told mini stories than songs, with well-observed colourful characters.
While there was a sombre quality to many of the songs,Ray Wylie Hubbard is actually a very funny performer who talked to the audience and kept them laughing with his self- depricating humour
Ray Wylie Hubbard showed why he has become such a legend.
