|
|
Home Grown ... Deep Fried and Sanctified!
A Little Bluesy, A Little Bit of Soul and a Whole Lot of Country Attitude
Don't let the "Southern" in Southern rock fool you. Everyone across the U.S.A. remembers when they first heard CMT's 20 Greatest Southern Rock Songs.
Maybe you first heard these songs blasting out of an eight track, rolling down the highway with the T-tops off. Maybe you were sneaking off to a kegger. Maybe you were in grade school swiping your uncle's tunes.
Whatever. These songs immediately take you back to a specific moment in time and demand to be turned up to 11. They are bona fide American classics -- songs that will never die.
We'll talk about the guitar genius of Duane Allman, the lyric poetry of Ronnie Van Zant, Charlie Daniels and Hank Jr. Not to mention the three guitar sonic assault of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Join CMT as we explore Southern rock's timeless appeal.
Show Time
Sat., Jul. 1 9:00 PM ET/PT
I wont miss this show. It may be the best on CMT all year! Cheers! TD |

Watched it... Recorded it... Pretty good show...
And for those of you that missed it...
Here's the TOP 20 (according to CMT professionals)
20 - The Allman Brothers (Gregg) - I'm No Angel
19 - Charlie Daniels - The South's Gonna Do It Again
18 - The Outlaws - Green Grass And High Tides
17 - The Marshall Tucker Band - Heard It In A Love Song
16 - Blackfoot - Train, Train
15 - The Ozark Mountain Daredevils - If You Wanna Get To Heaven
14 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Three Steps
13 - Georgia Sattellites - Keep Your Hands To Yourself
12 - Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Disaster
11 - Wet Willie - Keep On Smilin'
10 - Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around And Fell In Love
09 - .38 Special - Hold On Loosely
08 - Little Feat - Dixie Chicken
07 - Hank Williams Jr. - All My Rowdy Friends
06 - The Allman Brothers Band - Midnight Rider
05 - Charlie Daniels - The Devil Went Down To Georgia
04 - The Marshall Tucker Band - Can't You See
03 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird (DO WHAT???)
02 - The Allman Brothers Band - Ramblin' Man
01 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
It was nice seeing (and hearing) some live performances and pictures of the bands.
Also, Drive By Truckers, Hank Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, people from Rolling Stone Magazine and a host of others, were interviewed, asking for their opinions about certain songs.
Over-all, not a bad program. But, as we all know, we all believe we could have done a better job.

| I thought it was a pretty good show.....I don't really think it's an acurate list either. It probably should have been a top 50 list. Skynyrd would have at least 10 songs in it, at least five in the top ten. The Allman Bro.s would rule as well. The Outlaws...Green Grass And High Tides would be in the top 10 of a top 50 list. Geo. Satilite would come in about 49. There would be a strong showing of The Atlanta Rythum Section. |

| It's Southern Rock. While everyone can appreciate it, if you ain't from the South, as Bocephus says, well, you just might not get it. Id'a not put Elvin Bishop at #10 personally, but can't deny him the spot as it is earned. |

I would have put Elvin higher than #10 with "Travelin' Shoes".
I wouldn't have put "Fooled Around..." on the list at all. _________________ "I don't care what trip you're on...just don't park it on my lawn" |

Couldn't have been more disappointed. Should have named the show "20 Most Commercialized Southern Rock Songs" or " 20 Southern Rock Songs That Everyone Knows".
Where was "Melissa" by the Allman Brothers ? "Fall of the Peacemakers" by Molly Hatchet? "Ballad of Curtis Loew" by Lynyrd Skynyrd? "24 Hours at a Time" by Marshall Tucker Band?
All the songs on the show were good, but the "greatest", not even close!! |
